Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage can be traced back more than 3,000 years to the first recorded use of massage. The early discipline of Ayurvedic Medicine has ancient texts with instructions on how to massage pregnant women both during and after pregnancy. Prenatal massage has resurged in more recent years (about the late 19th century) in an effort to support maternal health during the pregnancy period.
This massage is very similar to Swedish massage, using minimal pressure and sweeping strokes on the body. Lying face-down and face-up is not recommended, and as such modifications are made to body positioning so as not to put the mother or baby at risk or discomfort.
Expecting mothers may expect to see many benefits from receiving prenatal massage including reduced swelling, relieved neck and back pain, improved sleep, relaxation, reduce leg cramping, help with joint pain, relieve pain naturally, improve circulation, reduce edema, increase energy, and reduce stress and anxiety.
It is important to check with your practitioner before receiving a prenatal massage, especially if you have diabetes, morning sickness, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, abdominal pain or bleeding, history of pre-term labor, or if you are considered a high-risk pregnancy.
s that suggest people who have conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic venous insufficiency, and lymphedema may benefit from this gentle therapy.
